According to the National Weather Service, Lonoke County has achieved StormReady status:
To become eligible for StormReady recognition, the following was provided: (1) a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center, (2) multiple ways of receiving severe weather information, (3) a means to monitor weather conditions, (4) the capability to inform citizens of severe weather, (5) community preparedness/safety talks and (6) written plans for dealing with severe weather.
It's amazing how few counties in Arkansas have achieved this status. I have no knowledge as to whether White County is working towards this status, but I already know that steps 4 and 5 are weaknesses in this area. Lonoke County received it's recognition for its accreditation during Thursday's Quorum court meeting. There are 1400 communities nationwide that share the StormReady accreditation.
The StormReady program is an initiative of the National Weather Service that aims to make communities better prepared for severe weather events and other disasters.
